Advances with the Addition of Structural Capabilities (HOUSTON, May 20,
2005) -
[top]
As an industry
leader in the manufacturing of pre-engineered metal buildings , Rigid
Building Systems continues its growth with the expansion of its
state-of-the-art manufacturing plant in Houston, Texas. This expansion
will allow Rigid to serve customers more effectively with the completion
of its new fully automated built-up frame building facility. Rigid's
goal was to increase built-up frame capacity by 50% without adding
additional man-hours. This was accomplished by minimizing material
handling man-hours, utilizing state-of-the-art automated equipment,
conveyor systems, beam transfers, paint conveyors and robotics
throughout the manufacturing process. Rigid has reduced overhead crane
pick-ups to three during the manufacturing process which include: (1)
unloading of raw material, (2) unloading from the paint bay and
(3) loading to ship.
We are very
pleased with the efficiencies gained by changing the manufacturing
philosophy from a ³pull² system to a ³push² system. We have accomplished
the goals set for the built-up manufacturing process and are now moving
forward to renovate our structural fabricating capabilities, utilizing
many of the concepts that have already proven themselves in our built-up
bay², explains Rigid President, Fred Campana.
Rigid has purchased and installed a fully automated FICEP 1102 Miter Saw
and Drill Line. The machine is completely CNC controlled and has the
capability to part mark/layout, manufacture tube, pipe, channel, angle,
heavy connection plate and wide flange beam up to 40 inches deep. Fully
automated material handling equipment, designed and manufactured by
Rigid, is currently being installed in conjunction with beam transfers
and a fully automated paint conveyor systems.
Rigid's goal is to have the structural bay completely renovated by the
end of June. Once complete, the capacity of the structural bay will have
increased by 100%, enabling Rigid to be very competitive in the
structural market. ³This will open up a new market for Rigid, which we
intend to aggressively pursue,² adds Campana.
Combining Rigid's leading market position in pre-engineered metal
building systems with its industry leading expertise in engineering and
construction, they are able to create exciting opportunities to provide
solutions to the market that are unparalleled. With this expansion,
Rigid continues to maximize and focus its resources and technology and
continue to provide cutting edge technology and excellent services to
the customers.

Nears Completion of New Frame Facility
-

Rigid Building
Systems has announced that their new 11,000 square foot frame building
facility expansion will be completed by the end of the second quarter.
When completed this new facility will increase Rigid's frame building
capacity by over 60%.
Rigid president, Fred Campana says, "Our frame building bays have been
operating 2 shifts at capacity for the past 2 years. Now that our new
component company, Millennium Building Components (MBC) is up and
running well, we have decided that now is an excellent time as to update
our frame building facilities. We feel very fortunate to have held
revenue numbers, even showing slight growth in 2003, over the past two
years. During this time period most of our competitors have not been as
fortunate."
Rigid's new frame building facility will be a state-of-the-art facility.
It will include welding technologies from the automated pipe welding
industry and also incorporate some material handling philosophies from
the auto industry. The expansion will include a new in-house designed
and fabricated beam welder with 84-inch web depth capability and flange
widths up to 20 inches. Rigid will also add a CNC controlled plasma
cutting system for built-up beam webs. The plasma is equipped with a
marking device which will not only piece mark the part, but also place
layout marks for clip locations, bracket location, bracing slot, etc.,
thus reducing the manual fitting time required. Located throughout the
facility will be material handling equipment, designed and manufactured
in-house, to reduce the man-hours required for material handling.
Campana says, "When we started the design of this new facility, we spent
a lot of time doing time and motion studies and analyzing where our
man-hours were being spent. Our old style of manufacturing was a "pull
system", where many of our man-hours were spent getting the material to
worker. This new system, which we refer to as a "push system", utilizes
new automated equipment (designed and manufactured in-house) and
conveyor systems to bring the material to the worker. The end result is
Rigid will be in a position to increase our plant capacity by over 60%,
when needed, while overall reducing man hours per ton in the immediate.
This expansion will make Rigid's plant one of the largest revenue
producers in the industry."

How to bend $5
into $55 million
In 1990 two
energetic engineers decided to do it their way. Smarter engineering.
Better service. Starting with just $5 and a ton of pre-engineered steel
building experience, Fred Campana and Alireza Ghodsi built a
diversified, highly respected company into a $55 million giant.
